The first settlers of the Lutheran congregation, Friedrich Ebert and Albert Hohenstein, who arrived here in the year 1869. Churches and schools did not exist. This situation gave them such sadness that they hoped that God would increase the number of inhabitants and provide them with the opportunity to hear God’s word. The spiritual situation did not improve but our longing for God’s word and sacrament were fulfilled; three Lutheran ministers were sent to us on a rotating basis every 4-6 weeks.
In the year 1878 the Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and other States stationed a missionary pastor, August Daeschlein, in Hershey, Nobles County, Minnesota, from which he ministered to the Lutherans throughout the area, organizing and serving 5-6 small congregations. Until this time religious services were held in residences but now the people saw the need for a worship place. Nine members of the group pulled together and built a small building, to be used for the worship of God.
The three congregations of Rose Hill, Cottonwood County; Rost Township and Delafield Township, Jackson County, met together and called Pastor C. Nickels to their service. Nickels accepted the call and established his home in the midst of these congregations.
Our congregation recognized that in a short time the original small church would need to be replaced with a larger one due to the great increase in population. On the 16th Sunday after Trinity, September 25, 1887, the new building was dedicated to the service of God by Pastor Rubel with the assistance of Pastor Schulze of Mankato and Pastor Schneider of Rose Hill.
In 1915 the congregation had outgrown the 2nd church, and a beautiful, roomy church was built which we still worship today. In 1973 an expansion project extended the narthex and basement 20 feet beyond the original church front. In 1996 St Peter entered into a dual parish agreement with Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Hunter Township
